Our farm is family run by Lindsay and Robyn and our 4 children. It is a broad acre farm located in the small wheatbelt town of Watheroo, Shire of Moora, half way between Perth and Geraldton, Western Australia.
As we are a broad acre farm we are always looking for ethical ways to improve the soil to increase our crop production. Jokingly in 2014, we laughed about having thousands of chickens on the property to fertilize the soil. That joke quickly turned into reality, and after much research and experimenting, we now have just under 2500 chickens running around a paddock scratching, pooing, eating seeds and insects and loving the sunshine.
We have 4 mobile homes which house up to 600 hens each, the coops were built by Lindsay and our son Tom out of sea containers which include a state of the art laying system to keep the eggs clean to avoid having to wash them, we move the coops to fresh pasture every 4 to 7 days. We rotate the chickens to different paddocks each season to eliminate the risk of disease.
It is the most rewarding job to see them so happy in the paddock doing what chickens naturally do, seeing them stretch their wings and run around, we keep them protected the best way possible from foxes and eagles by investing in three beautiful Mareema dogs called Bonnie, Thelma and Mr Mac.
In the warmer months they are quite happy to stay close to the mobile home but venture out in the cooler parts of the day. They eat dry grass and insects and we supplement them with our own mix of wheat, lupins, locally sourced meat meal and Shark Bay shell grit all year round. In winter they enjoy the luscious green grass which gives the eggs that beautiful deep yellow/orange color.
We are proud of our chickens and we can confidently say that our chickens are in the best possible environment to lay the freshest most nutrient dense egg for you to enjoy.
